You play as John Tanner, a cop who gets injured during a chase and ends up in a coma. Criterion Games had carried over gameplay mechanics from their previous set of games in the Burnout series into Hot Pursuit. Features such as rewarding players for near-misses, oncoming traffic, drifting and ramming into opponent vehicles which awarded them with nitro, were seen and featured in this game.
